Traffic Patrol
The Traffic Patrol is a group of volunteer moms and dads, working hard to keep all the Royal Oak students safe when crossing the roads. If you have time to volunteer please contact School Council at ROSchoolCouncil.com. Please note child minding is available for those volunteers with little ones at home.
Please pay close attention to the Drop & Go area when dropping off and picking up children.
Please remember to:
· SLOW down,
· Use the marked crosswalks, don’t jaywalk
· No u-turns, especially on or near a crosswalk
· Follow the rules of the road for the safety of all our children
Traffic Safety
One of the most concerning issues that is discussed at every School Council meeting is traffic safety. We all want our children to arrive at school safely and get home safely. It seems, we as parents, in a hurry to meet all the demands of our day sacrifice convenience for safety. When driving into Airdrie one day I noticed their highway sign flashing, "Save Lives Not Time!". I think this is something we all need to remember when dropping off and picking up our children.
The most concerning issues have been:
- U turns in the crosswalk
- Jaywalking, we have had many close calls with cars having to stop quickly as a child unexpectedly runs in front of their car
- Speeding through the school zone
- Parking in the crosswalks
To help with these issues we ask that drivers do not turn around in crosswalks or at intersections. Remember that the speed limit in a school zone is 30km and only cross the street at marked cross walks.
In order to ensure that all children arrive safe to school and home we must all take extra time and caution when entering our school zone.
Tips for driving through School Zones
The Calgary Parking Authority
• Be courteous.
• Obey all laws. Don’t travel faster than 30 km per hour. Come to a full stop at intersections.
• Yield to pedestrians. They have the right of way.
• Be cautious when passing a school bus stopped in front of a school or bus stop. Children may be boarding or exiting the bus. Be prepared to stop.
Each year the Calgary Parking Authority receives many complaints about how people park in school zones. For the safety of our children, we ask drivers to please be courteous and park responsibly when dropping off or picking up children from school.
• Watch for signs indicating ‘No Stopping’ and ‘No Parking’ zones.
• School bus zones must be kept clear so children can step off the bus and onto a curb instead of exiting into a busy street.
• Leave 5 meters between your car and any crosswalk markings. This will ensure children are visible when they enter the crosswalk.
• Parking too close to stop signs, yield signs or intersections makes it difficult to see children in the area and obstructs the view of other motorists. A distance of 5 meters is required.
• Blocking entrances to garages or driveways angers neighbors. Stay back at least 1.5 meters.
