School Council October 2013 Update

School Council October News
Hopefully now that October is upon us, you and your children are well into a routine. I am the first to admit that getting back into a schedule wasn’t the easiest feat to undertake. That said, I am excited for this school year and I am excited about all the things we plan on doing with School Council. Read on to learn more:

School Council Elections
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 15th at 7 pm (note the date change from our regular Monday meetings). Yes, this is right after Thanksgiving and a turkey coma may be upon us, but it is also an important evening…. Election night!

All of our executive positions will be voted on. If you are interested in filling one of the positions, please attend and put your name forward… NO experience is necessary. If you can’t attend, please send us an e-mail at ROSchoolCouncil@gmail.com and we would be happy to put your name forward. Our council positions include Chair, Vice-Chair (or two Vice-Chairs), Secretary, Treasurer, Appreciation Director, Community Spirit Director, Fun Lunch Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator and Key Communicator.

If you don’t want to be on the executive, please still come and help vote in whom you feel would best represent our children at School Council. And as always, you don’t need to be on the executive to attend our meetings or to volunteer on committees. Everyone is welcome and we sure enjoyed seeing and hearing from so many of you at our September meeting!

Halloween Dance
It is time to get your BOO on! Our annual Halloween Dance will be held on Friday, October 25th. Last year’s dance was a huge success and was very well attended. This year we will follow a similar format in having two separate time slots for the dance so as many of you can attend as possible.

Notices and more information will be going home with your children shortly.

Fun Lunch
Dates and forms for our Fun Lunches this year will be sent home soon. Stay tuned for more details.

Appreciation Committee Thank you
Thanks to Kim J. and all those that volunteered their time and food to put on a potluck for our teachers during the parent-teacher conferences.

Terry Fox Run

Although a little chilly, this year’s Terry Fox run was another great success. Congratulations to the students for the laps they ran and the money they raised for cancer research. Thank you to all the parent volunteers that helped ensure the event ran smoothly!

School Council Welcomes You

School Council Welcomes You

Thank you to all those that attended our first School Council meeting this school year! It was well attended and we appreciated your feedback and your presence!

If you are new to our school or have never been involved with School Council, why not make this your first year? You don’t have to be on the executive to attend our meetings and attending is a great way to stay informed and influence decisions affecting our students and school community!

School Council is part of a well-functioning school. Our role is to:
  • act as an advisory board to the school and administration
  • help bring issues affecting our students and school to the school’s attention.
  • plan fun events for our students and school community like movie nights, dances, fun lunches and appreciation events.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday, October 15th, and it is our election night! You can either volunteer for or help vote in this year’s executive! We would like to thank our parent volunteers who have served this past year and some several years on our council. Your time and efforts have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated!

All council positions will be voted on and any parent or guardian can be considered for them. That said we are looking to fill both our chair/co-chair and treasurer positions. If you are interested, please e-mail us at roschoolcouncil@gmail.com. Our council positions are Chair, Vice-Chair (ortwo Co-Chairs), Secretary, Treasurer, Appreciation Director, Community Spirit Director, Fun Lunch Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator and Key Communicator.

You still have the chance to be a part of building the
Royal Oak School Playground!

We are still looking for volunteers for Saturday June 1st! If you are over 18 and would like to help out with this project please email us at: ROPlaygroundcommittee@gmail.com

The ground/site prep work has begun! Once the site is ready we will build the playground structure. We have booked Friday May 31st to Sunday June 2nd as our "build weekend" so mark your calendars. We will be looking for 40 - 50 people per day, no experience necessary (must be 18 yrs or older). The final ground work (ie: Pour-n-Place rubber pad, repairing sod where required, etc) will be finished by mid-June.

We are still in need of tools for the build weekend. Please email us if you are able to loan/donate any of the required items.

THANK YOU!
